History

The architect Lev Vlodek (Льв Львович (Леон Леонович) Влодек) built the Passage from 1898-1899, a beautiful hotel and an ornately decorated corridor connected to Deribasovskaya and Preobrazhenskaya (Преображенская).[1][2] The corridor has glassed arches, molded ornaments and several sculptures.

The shopping mall's grand opening was January 23, 1900. The mall caught fire on October 31, 1901, and miraculously no one was hurt, [1] and to the credit of the Odessa fire brigade, there was little damage.[3]

Construction

On the roof of the Deribasovskaya side of the corridor, flanking either side of the Пассаж sign, there is the a dilapidated statue of the Greek God Mercury on a steam engine and Ceres on a boat.
