On the western side of the Opera Theater around 9 meters (30 feet) from the theater, is a wonderful romantic little courtyard called the Palais-Royal (Пале-Рояль), named after the Paris garden opposite the north wing of the Louvre. The courtyard was redesigned in 1920 after the revolution by Bezchastnov Mihail Fedorovich.

In the center of the courtyard shaded with huge old trees is a fountain of a bronze woman shielding her head from the water which flows down above her.

On the other side of the courtyard is a flowerbed in the form of a heart. In the center of the heart stands a sculpture of two young lovers embracing, called Cupid and Psyche(Амур и Психея).

The Tale of Cupid and Psyche first appeared as a digressionary story told by an old woman in Lucius Apuleius' novel, The Golden Ass, written in the second century A.D.

As of the summer of 2007 Cupid and Psyche had been removed, during reconstruction of the courtyard.

In the northwestern corner of this courtyard is a staircase down to Ekaterininskaya Street 13 (Екатерининская).
