Popov Andrey Alexandrovich (1821-1898) was a russian vessel-builder between 1860-1890. He became a leader of designing and constructing of the armoured vessel. He served at the Black Sea Navy in 1838, gave orders by the auxiliary cruiser "Meteor", took place in the Crimean War 1853-1856, gave orders by the steamship "Taman", which broke through the line of enemies vessel from Sevastopol to Odessa, destroyed 6 turkish trade vessel. He organized the defence of Sevastopol from the sea, using the artillery, which have been taken off from the vessels. Up to the end of the defence he was a leader of the artillery equipment of the tower. He has been confered by 2 orders for fighting merits.

14 propeller corvettes and 12 clipers have been constructed under the guidance of Popov in Petersburgin 1856. He became the master of headquarters of the port Kranshtadskiy in 1856-1858. He was a leader of a vessel detachment in Pacific Ocean in 1858-1861. The first, in the history of shipconstructing, armoured cruisers of type "General-Admiral" has been constructed under his project in 1870-1872. He was leadership of designing and constructing of the first russian armoured vessel, including the vessel "The Great Peter" from 1877. The half armoured frigate of improved serie "Dmitriy Donskoy" and "Vladimir Monomach" have been constructed under the project of Popov in 1899. He was an author of the floating battery project, the hull of which had the form of circle.
